The Art of Content Creation: How I Built an Audience of over 700,000 TikTok Followers

Woman in a kitchen holding a pepper, with workout video thumbnails and social media stats overlay. Energetic and health-focused mood.

You’re probably thinking, “Here we go, another post about how to be successful on TikTok.” But hear me out – after growing my own page to over 700,000 I think I bring a useful perspective.

Back in February 2020, right as TikTok was exploding in popularity, I started posting content about health, fitness, and my experience with weight loss.

My audience took off fast! At one point, I was even gaining up to 100,000 followers a week.

There are a few things I credit my growth to, a big one being timing (given that it was the height of the pandemic).

And while timing played a decent part, I believe a few other things played an even bigger role in my success that would be helpful to share with someone looking to get into content creation.

Without further ado, here are my top four pieces of advice:

Find Your Niche

If you want to build an authentic audience, Ask yourself:

  • What do I genuinely find interesting?

  • What do I already do daily that others might find valuable or entertaining?

  • What can I teach that others might deem valuable?

My Approach:

I began by posting simple home workouts and my favorite healthy snacks and grocery finds. These were things I was already doing, I just started documenting them.

Once I leaned into what was already coming naturally, my content felt effortless. These actions felt mundane to me at the time, but I quickly learned that people saw real value in them.

Do some Research

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel, but you do need to understand it. Study other creators in your space:

What do you like about their approach?

What do you think could be improved?

How can you bring a different perspective?

My Take:

When I looked around the health and wellness content space, so many creators felt unrealistic.

They had memberships at the most expensive gyms, perfect lighting, and looked like they just stepped out of a Lululemon catalog. I wanted to share the messy, human side of it.

My videos were filmed in my cluttered garage or backyard, and with whatever weights I could find at my local Target or Facebook Marketplace.

There was one single focus of my content - you don’t have to be perfect, you just have to try.

Be Yourself, Unapologetically

Authenticity isn’t a buzzword, it’s your brand. If you try to copy someone else’s tone or aesthetic, you’ll blend in.

Don’t be afraid to stand out by letting your quirks shine through.

Social media is saturated with content using the same “formula”, making it so repetitive that many creators start to look and sound alike.

My Take:

YOU are the key to success. Videos where I tried to mimic the “vibe” of another influencer not only flopped, but also felt inauthentic.

I quickly learned my community was connecting with me, not a version I thought they wanted. Some of the most common comments would have to do with how I came across relatable and genuine.

I wasn’t going out of my way to do this, it just came naturally.

Just Start Posting

Overthinking kills creativity. Your content doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to exist.

Post the video, share the story, and learn as you go.

My Take:

Some of my most viral posts almost never existed because I thought they weren’t good enough.

Meanwhile, the ones I spent hours trying to perfectly curate didn’t stick.

You are your biggest critic - don’t let false ideas or assumptions of what you think will or will not resonate stop you from posting.

Your life is anything but ordinary, why not share it?

As a successful woman, you get to encounter remarkable experiences and gain so many valuable insights along the way.

The art of content creation isn’t about going viral, it’s about creating something meaningful to your audience, and more importantly, yourself.
